# Pricing

> Simple, transparent pricing for SMS and MMS

Chirp offers transparent, pay-as-you-go pricing with no hidden fees.

## Phone Numbers

Phone numbers have two cost components:

**Purchase Fee**

One-time cost when you acquire a new phone number.

**Monthly Rental**

Recurring monthly fee to maintain ownership of the phone number.

## Message Pricing

Messages are billed based on:

* Message type (SMS or MMS)
* Direction (inbound or outbound)
* Phone number type (local, toll-free, short code)
* Destination carrier

### SMS Messages

Text-only messages. Pricing varies by:

* Number type (local, toll-free, short code)
* Carrier (AT\&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, etc.)
* Direction (inbound vs outbound)

**Typical Range**: $0.0079 - $0.015 per message

### MMS Messages

Messages with media (images, videos, audio). MMS is more expensive than SMS.

**Typical Range**: $0.02 - $0.03 per message

## Test Mode is Free

All messages sent using test API keys (`sk_test_app_*`) are completely free. This includes:

* Messages sent through the Playground
* API calls using test keys
* Webhook testing

There are no limits on test messages.

## Billing

You're only charged for:

* Phone number rental fees (monthly)
* Messages sent with live API keys (`sk_live_app_*`)
* Phone number purchase fees (one-time)

You're **not** charged for:

* API requests
* Webhook deliveries
* Messages in test mode
* Failed messages

## Volume Discounts

High-volume customers may qualify for discounted rates. Contact our sales team for custom pricing.
